Welcome to Leicester Museum & Art Gallery

A family friendly day out, the galleries include Ancient Egypt, Dinosaurs, Leicester Stories Gallery, the Victorian Art Gallery, Arts & Crafts Gallery, Picasso Ceramics: The Attenborough Collection and Leicester's internationally renowned German Expressionism collection. Formerly known as New Walk Museum.

The museum hosts a vast array of temporary exhibitions, featuring works from the collections and touring exhibitions from national museums. Plus a range of activities from entertaining talks, children’s handling sessions, lunchtime concerts, licensed for weddings, civil ceremonies and available for private hire.

Visit the gift shop to buy a range of exhibition merchandise and contemporary crafts, or pop by the Museum refreshment area to recharge with a drink, some food and free wifi.

Visitor Notice:

Please note that on Tuesday 23rd April the Victorian Art Gallery, Arts & Crafts and Picasso Ceramics galleries will be closed to the public all day for a private event.
However please do visit for other museum galleries open throughout the day, including Dinosaurs, Ancient Egypt and temporary exhibitions Paint to Pixel X Repainting Subway Art and Procession in Bali: A World in Painting.

NOTICE 28th March 2024:

A gallery at Leicester’s flagship museum that’s dedicated to the mammals, birds and reptiles of the animal kingdom will be closing next week.

The Wild Space gallery, which houses around 100 taxidermied animals, will close to the public on Sunday 7 April.

'What an absolutely brilliant place this, there is an incredible range of exhibits from an outstanding dinosaur exhibition, through an impressive Egyptian one to the quite stunning display of Victorian art. I hadn't expected to spend anywhere near as long as I ended up spending here, but I was just drawn in by everything. Every display is so well curated, to inform and entertain and to keep your attention, each had so much to offer, there wasn't one that I walked away from with anything but appreciation for the thought that had gone into it.'
