Saving Money for Seniors – How To Get Freebies and Free Stuff 2025

If you’re over 50, you can unlock thousands of pounds worth of savings. There are loads of offers for over 60s, over 70s and beyond. Keep reading to find out how you can get freebies to help save loads of money in 2025.

Winter Fuel Payment

If you were born before 22 September 1959 you could get between £100 and £300 to help you pay your heating bills for winter 2025 to 2026. This is known as a ‘Winter Fuel Payment’. Most people who are eligible will get the Winter Fuel Payment automatically, and if you are, you’ll get a letter in October or November saying how much you’ll get, then you’ll be paid in November or December 2025.

Cold Weather Payment

You may get Cold Weather Payments if you’re getting certain benefits or Support for Mortgage Interest. This will be paid to you automatically, and you’ll get your payment if the average temperature in your area is recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees celsius or below over 7 consecutive days.

Free Bus and Rail Passes

The age at which you’ll qualify for a free bus or travel pass, usually covering travel between 9.30am and 11pm, varies across the UK. It tends to be around pension age, which is currently 66. However, if you live in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Merseyside and London can claim the travel concession at 60, with free rail, Tube and tram travel sometimes included too!

The 60+ London Oyster photocard permits free travel on buses, tube, trams, trains and London Overground after 9am on weekdays (or anytime on weekends).

If you live in Merseyside, your Merseytravel Over 60s will unlock free travel on local buses and trains across Merseyside, and also covers cross-river trips on Mersey Ferries.

In Wales, you can travel for free on most bus services in Wales and the borders and get discounted or free travel on many rail services too.

In Northern Ireland, senior (65+) SmartPasses are valid on cross border bus and rail services, and can also be used for free public transport journeys taken entirely within the Republic of Ireland on services run by participating operators. 60+ SmartPasses are valid on on all Translink scheduled services within Northern Ireland.

Discounted National Express Travel

Over-60s can get senior coachcards for discounted travel on National Express services, making travelling across the UK cheaper than ever before.

Free Prescriptions & Eye Tests for Over-60s

Once you reach 60, you can get free prescriptions in England, alongside free NHS-funded eye tests from the age of 60 and free NHS dental treatment if you’re receiving pension guarantee credit. On top of this, over-60s can get 20% off glasses and lenses from Specsavers’ £70 range or above, including designer options, and Boots Opticians offer people 10% off glasses or prescription sunglasses if they are aged 60 or over who have an Advantage Card and are part of the over 60s Rewards scheme.

Free Hearing Tests & Hearing Aid Trials

Many opticians and hearing specialists (Boots, Specsavers, Hidden Hearing) offer free hearing checks and even short-term free trials of hearing aids. This is a great way to help live life to it’s fullest, with a good sense of hearing to stay alert of everything going on around you.

Discounted Cinema Tickets

Did you know that most cinema chains run discounts for over-60s, though you may have to attend at certain times. Picturehouse has a free-to-join Silver Screen Club with various discounted tickets, and Odeon Silvers £3.50 tickets include free hot drinks and biscuits as well as the film. Everyman offers a free slice of cake and a hot drink to those attending weekly Silver Screen matinees, if they are over 55. At Cineworld, Cineseniors (over 60s) get tickets for just £4.50, and this includes hot drinks and biscuits too!

Free TV Licence

You can apply for a free TV Licence if you, as the licence holder, are 75 years or older and you, or your partner living at the same address, get the benefit. A TV licence ordinarily costs £159 a year, so this is a big saving every year.

Discounted Sports Tickets

Older sports fans – typically those aged 65 and over – can get discounted matchday and season tickets for football, cricket and rugby games.

Free Gym Access

Many gyms and fitness centres, whether run by the local council or third-party providers, offer senior discounts. The Better chain, which runs many council facilities, offers senior membership to those aged over 66, while Everyone Active also has a senior discount for the over-66 crowd. Other gym providers, such as Total Fitness, offer discounts starting from age 60. It may be worth contacting your local council to see what gym offering they have.

NHS & Community Exercise Classes

Some GP surgeries and community centres offer free yoga, pilates, walking football, or swimming sessions for seniors to help with mobility. Check with your local NHS trust to see what’s on offer near you!
